This is a game where the best 5 card hand wins the pot at showdown and each player is dealt 7 cards (2 down, 4 up, 1 down). The deal and betting always move in a clockwise direction.
Setup
7 Card Stud has a 'limit' style betting structure and there are three types of bets:
1. Ante
2. Small Bet
3. Big Bet
The big bet is normally twice the small bet and ten times the ante. The ante is a small investment all players at the table must make before a deal to receive cards in a hand.
The Deal
All players who posted the ante are dealt two cards face down ('hole cards') and one card face up ('door cards').
The Bring-In
The player with the lowest door card is responsible for the BRING-IN (a forced bet) and has 2 options:
1. Place a bet equal to the ante
2. Complete the bet to the value of the small bet
Note - If two or more players have the same value of door card, the bring-in is determined by the lowest suit in alphabetical order from best to worst: Spades, Hearts, Diamonds and Clubs.
Third Street (Betting Round 1)
The betting moves around the table until every player has had a chance to act and has either folded out of the hand or bet the same amount as everyone else still in the hand.
Note - If the bring-in only bet the ante, the first raise in this round may only be to 'complete' to the value of the small bet and any further raises may only be the value of the small bet (with a maximum of 3 raises).
Fourth Street (Betting Round 2)
All remaining players receive one card face up, starting with the player on the dealer's left and the player with the highest value of visible cards is first to act. He may either check or bet.
The betting procedure is similar to Round 1 and the size of any bet or raise is equal to the small bet if no pair is visible. If any player has a pair with the 2 visible cards the bet size may be equal to the small or big bet.
Once a big bet is made during the round, the remaining calls or raises must be equal in value to the big bet.
Note - If there are 2 players with the same highest value of visible cards, the player on the left of the dealer is first to act.
Fifth Street (Betting Round 3)
The process in Fourth Street is repeated BUT the size of any bet or raise is now equal to the BIG BET.
Note - The 'pair' rule for bet size is no longer relevant.
Sixth Street (Betting Round 4)
The process in Fifth Street is repeated and the size of any bet or raise is equal to the Big Bet
Seventh Street (Betting Round 5)
This is the final round.
The process in Sixth Street is repeated but the card the dealt FACE DOWN and the size of any bet or raise is equal to the Big Bet.
Showdown
If two or more players remain in the hand after all betting is complete, all players display their best 5 card hand in a showdown to determine the winner - the player with the highest hand.
If two or more winning hands have the same value, the pot is split equally between them (all suits are equal for the purposes of awarding the pot).
